The World Wide Web is a sea of opportunities for those who know how to do it right.  As of this writing, there are approximately 3.5 billion on the internet (Source:  http://www.internetlivestats.com/).

Obviously, that’s a whole lot of visitors to attract and an enormous number of websites to compete with.

This is where you need Search Engine Marketing (SEM); i.e, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC).  SEM is all about targeted traffic, leads, conversions.

Since 93% of website experience begins with a search, you either go SEO (organic/free) or PPC (paid).  Google remains the top search engine vis a vis Yahoo, Bing, etc. so it makes sense for your SEM campaigns to be always Google-friendly (read: Google compliant) so you reach the majority of searchers on the net.

SEO or PPC?

Depending on your goals, both are effective means of getting your sites found on the web using keywords unique to your site.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization is all about organic traffic (you don’t pay Google to put your site on Page 1). If you have the right description of what your site offers, you attract visitors who are exactly looking for your type of service or product.  With the right people clicking through the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page), the site gains more traffic.

With SEO, there are no shortcuts to have your site ranked in the top 5 positions. However, it’s a good SEM investment as it can give you continuous traffic.  A high-quality website and an excellent SEO plan are needed to achieve the desired results.

PPC

Pay Per Click, on the other hand, and as the name suggests, is paid search– more clicks for your ads means you pay more. These are ads found above or below the organic search results which, when implemented correctly, can drive conversions.  The highly optimized your keyword, the more converts for your site. In terms of cost, you can work around a fixed budget utilizing the Google Keyword Tool.  The tool gives cost per click estimates for a chosen keyword.

Just like SEO, PPC needs a good ad campaign to make it work for you.
